In medieval times this was a landmark for travellers, a place to take a rest. Today the church is a ruin, but Kronobäck is still a breathing space along the road with a newly built centre for visitors.
In Kronobäck, south of Mönsterås and quite close to Kalmarsund, stand the ruins of a medieval monastery church built in the late 1400s, by the Order of St. John, the Knights Hospitaller order with its headquarters on Rhodes, and the monks specialised in medical care. The monastery was of significant importance for the people in the region, where there was help and care available for passing seafarers, or where pilgrims could pause for a rest on their journey. Around the site there are many remains that indicate human presence in Kronobäck as far back as the stone age. Today the monastery ruin is a meeting place for archaeologists, school children, tourists and anyone interested in history. Should you happen to spot a monk by the ruin, it’s not your imagination. These things happen at Kronobäck. You’re welcome to visit and take part in the events arranged here, such as outdoor cinema, the Kronobäck Day, guided tours, theatre, concerts etc.
