The surface of the Kevershäll rock was formed by glacial action thousands of years ago. During the Ancylus age, 7000-5000 BC, the Baltic Sea was an inland lake and Sweden was connected to Denmark. Traces of the Ancylus Lake shoreline have been discovered on the south side of Kevershäll, 29 metres above sea level. The top of the rock was never covered by water. It consists of porphyry, which is an igneous type of rock. Over thousands of years of crumbling and erosion, furrows have formed along the sides of the rock and some of these are filled with weathering gravel.
There are several tales and myths about Kevershäll circulating in the region surrounding the rock. Giants, trolls and other fairy-tale creatures are said to have made Kevershäll their dwelling. Rumour also has it that the rock has been the home of a tailor who long ago fled the war and settled in a cave on the north side. His dwelling was given the name ‘Skräddarekammaren’ and can be seen from the trail.
The trail’s longest loop is approximately 2.5 km long and has a relatively steep rise. If you have problems walking, some segments may be difficult. In cold or wet weather the rock surface can get slippery, so take care!
The Right of Public Access also entails responsibilities for anyone walking through fields and forests. Respect the environment and don’t leave garbage behind.
Look out for the trolls – they will show you the way! Happy walking!
